Shapiro Inequalities
In 1954 H. S. Shapiro conjectured an innocuous looking sequence of inequalities to be valid. It was soon discovered that all but finitely many are not. The proof of the remaining cases was a non-trivial and inelegant process completed in 1989 by B. A. Troesch.
